A sleeping menace is roused deep in the darkness of the forest. For decades it grows, biding its time, reaching out to tug at the ordinary lives of those living beyond the shadow of the trees.

Their children begin to disappear.

Unaware and unsuspecting of the danger, a group of families, friends for many years, journey to a newly opened hotel. It stands alone in a clearing a mile or more within the forest boundary.

For some this will be their last reunion.

"Alison Buck's writing gives us a fresh perspective on horror. She combines timeless themes of good and evil with a very contemporary concern for genuinely believable characters. Abiding Evil is a sinister tale informed by psychological insight, wit and a style of writing that breathes life into the protagonists. This is a dark story that can make your blood run cold and yet also touch your heart. It is a chilling book which will appeal as much to fans of psychological drama as it will to lovers of traditional horror."

Although, as a rule, she concerns herself with apparently quite normal, everyday characters, populating what appear to be quite normal and everyday surroundings, the events and dangers they encounter soon draw them away from the commonplace and lead them inexorably towards often frightening and sometimes bloody outcomes.

Alison's can be very dark, unsettling tales.

AUTHOR ALISON BUCK is a modern-day Edgar Allen Poe!

ABIDING EVIL by ALISON BUCK is an amazing novel so well plotted that I was kept in suspense. Each time I felt I knew what was going to happen and I had my suspect, she proved me wrong. I just had to keep reading to discover that I'm not as smart an investigator as I thought myself to be. This is actually my third novel in the "horror" genre that I have read. I now find myself intrigued by ALISON BUCK's ability to craft a novel with such dark and scary characters. In ABIDING EVIL, you first meet Jon, a young boy with a horrificly mal-formed face that the doctors could not improve. Jon is abandoned by his mother at his widowed Grandmother's farm house in the late 1940's. He has never been to a school, and his education comes strictly from his grandmother. He learns survival skills from his grandmother and lives in the woods to avoid contact with other human beings. One day he comes in from the woods to find his grandmother dead at the kitchen table. He does not know what to do, so he leaves her body there. In the small town of Losien, in 1957 children begin disappearing and the Sheriff's office is incapable of solving the mysteries. After a couple of years bodies are found. The body count is four. I thought it must be Jon.

Fast foward to modern day. a group of college friends, some with children decide to hold their annual Reunion at a small hotel located in the woods a short distance from Losien. You get to know the group of mis-matched people, sort of like characters from St. Elmo's fire. Each of the group brings with them a certain amount of baggage and you have contempt for the hot-shot lawyer, Neil, empathy for his "new" boyfriend Dave; sympathy for 13 year old Emma, whose Dad and step-mother (Jeff & Rita) she walked in on while they were making love. Phil and his "bride" Lou. who is half his age and has a baby Ethan. Then there's Bill and Annie, with daughter Lisa and toddler Mikey, who suffers motion sickness. After settling into the hotel, seeminly the only guests, a snowstorm hits and you see the children and some of the adults having fun with snowball fights and building of snowmen. There is also time of the adults gathering in the lounge where you get an insight into their personalities, which make you wonder if they ever were real friends. Then, their children disappear. The Hotel owners have not returned from town, and the group are left to man their own hunt for the children. The lawyer, Neil wants no part of joining the search, but he finds news articles in the hotel office relating stories of the previous cases of disappearing children. No one had ever been caught and the cases remained unsolved. He shares this with the group, which heightens their fears.

The hunt for the children will keep you turning the pages as it builds up the suspense and you find yourself praying for the safe return of the children.

ALISON BUCK wrote this in 2007, and I am really thankful that I found ALISON BUCK and ABIDING EVIL, and her other novel DEVOTED SISTERS here on Amazon Kindle. I highly recommend this novel for anyone who enjoys a good scary novel. FIVE STARS is not enough to affirm my award of appreciation for this novel.

I will be anxious for more of Author ALISON BUCK's work.

Abiding Evil edition by Alison Buck Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Simply the best horror novel I have read in over the past 10 years. The story is creepy and is full of characters that I cared about. I have read it again since my first reading, still the best
This was a good book. Very well written.
This story is very, very suspenseful and well written. As a parent, it scares the h--- out of you. I did not know of this author before but now I will be sure to read all her books. I could not put this book down!
Abiding Evil by Alison Buck.
This is a top notch horror thriller, one of the finest I've read in some years. Move over Stephen King and Dean Koontz. There is a new Queen of Horror on the scene who will keep you burning the lights well after Midnight. Long may she reign. I expect great things in future from Ms. Buck and fully expect her work to be listed among the top best sellers.
This one grabs the reader from the very beginning and builds the suspense with great characters and storyline. One highly obnoxious and egotistical character drew a big cheer from me when he finally gets eviscerated. It's very chilling stuff. I read it recently while in the wilds of the mountains in British Columbia. Hope, B.C. to be exact - site of the first Rambo movie and a place where there have been sightings of Big Foot or Sasquatch as the natives call him. Plenty of trees and isolation which only adds to the atmosphere conjured up by this novel. The price for this thriller is a bargain and well worth it. The nightmares continue long after you've read the final pages. I now definitely have to check out Alison Buck's other novel, DEVOTED SISTERS. This is not my favourite genre--I prefer mysteries, thrillers and spy novels but Buck has made me a fan. Read this book -- time well spent.

James A. Anderson, Author
A serial killer is on the loose in a small town during the 1950's, but he is never apprehended.

Twenty years later it appears he is again on the hunt, when a young girl disappears in the same remote area. During this time, and without anyone's knowledge, a withdrawn young man abides in these woods. He has no family, no education, and he lives in a cave like an animal. He is the only one who believes there was evil in the woods many years ago, and he believes it has returned.

Fast forward another twenty years. A group of friends, and their four children, arrive in this remote forest area for a quiet holiday. They stay at an old, renovated hotel on the edge of the woods, never having heard of the unsolved deaths over the past forty years. What happens over the next few days is how bad dreams are created. Fear, death, and horror wrap around these individuals while they are fighting for their lives, and that of their children's.

Where are the children? Are they safe? What is happening in the woods? Is there evil abiding there? Who can they trust? Can anyone help them? Is the young man in the woods evil?

You must read this book to find out. Prepare for bad dreams. Excellent writing, Ms. Buck.
